Chadar lake is also known as the Zanskar Gorge. It is known to be the toughest trek, especially in India. It lies in the Union territory of Ladakh. The altitude of Chadar Trek is 3300 to 11,100 ft. It is beautiful especially because of the winter trail over the frozen Zanskar river. One needs to be mentally and physically prepared to cover this trial.
Most of the trek is covered on foot (105km). The temperature out there is really low, one can expect the mercury count to drop from -15 to -20 degrees during the day and at night it goes down to -25 degrees celsius. The best time to do the Chadar trek is January and February. The reason behind these months is that the ice sheet of the river is thick and solid, there is no chance of any accidents because of the toughness of the ice sheet. Chadar trek is safe but tough. Make sure you are following all the instructions your agency tells you to follow and it is better to have a company around than to be all alone. It is very safe for a girl or solo traveller in general to trek here. Though it is recommended for any solo male or female to team up with other people or at least make a group of 6; as to be safe or is supported by others in case of mishaps. There should be a minimum of six people in a group and can even exceed up to 15-18 people in a group but usually not more than that.
