Brief Summary Of The Treks

·       Kalsubai – Ideal For: Novices, sunrise lovers, fitness fanatics, and those desirous of reaching the summit of Maharashtra.

·       Harishchandragad – Ideal For: Campers, historians, photographers, and trekking lovers desirous of enjoying all that the mountain offers.

·       Trekking Time: Usually, it takes about 4 to 6 hours to reach and climb back down from the top of Kalsubai, which makes the trek perfect for one-day trails. On the contrary, it takes around 6 to 10 hours to trek up Harishchandragad peak, and it is perfect for camping for one night over two days.

In the list of most renowned Sahyadri treks, there is one battle which never ends: Kalsubai vs Harishchandragad. As a trek lover, I have been to both treks separately, and it is safe to say that making a choice out of them is not at all easy.

While one gives you the experience of being on the highest point in the entire Maharashtra, the latter offers you an all-rounded mountain experience full of cliffs, caves, temples, and camping spots. For those wondering whether it would be better to opt for one trek over another for their weekend escape, this comparative analysis may prove helpful.

Kalsubai Overview: Conquering the “Everest of Maharashtra”

As a legend in the Sahyadri treks, Kalsubai in Maharashtra stands out due to its majestic height of 1,646 meters above sea level. This makes it the highest peak in the state of Maharashtra, popular among thousands of trekkers who come here each year.

While most of the Sahyadri treks are associated with historical forts, the Kalsubai trek offers you one thing and one thing only – getting to the summit.

Why Kalsubai Must Be On Your Maharashtra Trek Itinerary

It feels special to be at the highest point of an entire state, and Kalsubai gives you this feeling. Here are a few of the majestic peaks that can be seen from the peak summit:

●      Alang

●      Madan

●      Kulang

●      Ratangad

●      Ajoba

●      Bhandardara backwaters

On my first summit experience, there were clouds hovering below the peak, creating a Himalayan-like feel that was unexpected in Maharashtra. This, along with many other reasons, is why every dedicated trekker in Maharashtra makes the Kalsubai peak trek a mandatory on their itinerary.

My Experience Climbing Kalsubai

Something that is often ignored while writing trek posts is the logistical side. While Kalsubai Peak is relatively accessible, good logistics play a critical role in making a successful climb.

While trekking with TrekPanda, all the logistical aspects were taken care of by them, starting from the departure point to managing a large group efficiently.

Our overnight journey was planned well, ensuring everyone rested before reaching Bari village, which is the base for the trek. The trek leaders gave us a safety briefing just before the climb. The pace was steady throughout the climb, and more importantly, nobody was pushed hard.

This becomes especially important for first-time trekkers who often fail to measure the level of physical exertion it takes to conquer the highest peak in Maharashtra.

What Makes This Trek Different

One unique feature of the Kalsubai trek is the presence of ladders. Many iron ladders were constructed to help make some of the steeper rock faces more manageable. Today, the ladders have become a trademark of the route and often appear in pictures taken by tourists.

The route changes drastically during each season.

During Monsoon Season

●      Beautiful green grasslands

●      Waterfalls in neighboring hills

●      Foggy weather

●      Strong winds at the summit

During Winter Season

●      Clear views of the mountains

●      Comfortable temperature

●      Good visibility of sunrises

●      Good photography conditions

During Summer Season

●      Dry routes

●      Clear views of the mountains

●      Soothing breeze during the morning and afternoon

The Summit Experience

Each trek has its own special moments. For Kalsubai, that special moment is undoubtedly sunrise. The sight of sunlight casting shadows on Bhandardara Dam while endless mountain ranges lie in front of you is breathtaking.

There is also a temple of Goddess Kalsubai located on the summit. As compared to many other locations, people do not leave the summit quickly after sunrise. You will love spending up to one or two hours at least there to enjoy the views.

Who Is the Ideal Candidate for the Kalsubai Trek?

The Kalsubai trek suits:

●      The first-time trekkers

●      Fitness enthusiasts

●      Sunrise lovers

●      Weekend adventurers

●      People preparing for the advanced Himalayan treks

Harishchandragad Overview: The Ultimate Trekker’s Paradise

While the summit ascent can be attributed to the appeal of the Kalsubai trek, it is the journey that makes the Harishchandragad trekin Maharashtra a paradise.

Whenever I get asked which trek experience feels more complete, my answer is always Harishchandragad. It encompasses nature views, history, campsites, historical structures, caves, thick woods, and the most breathtaking views in the Sahyadri range.

Why Harishchandragad Feels Like More Than Just a Trek

Unlike the Kalsubai trek, Harishchandragad is not centred around one main attraction. There are many things to see in this adventure, and all of them will take place in the huge plateau area. Harishchandragad’s history dates back to the times of various dynasties, and the whole trek resembles a tour in a mountain kingdom.

My First Sunrise at Konkan Kada

Every trekker will remember their first sighting of Konkan Kada; well, I definitely do. I arrived at the cliff edge before sunrise, but there was no visibility at all besides darkness and strong winds at that time.

Soon after, the valley started becoming visible through the clouds. That was when the real magic was about to happen.

Large clouds would be rising up from the Konkan side, thus forming an active sea of clouds under the cliff. None of the photographs taken or drone footage available does justice to the sight.

It’s the vertical cliffs combined with the dynamic clouds that give Konkan Kada its title of one of the most awe-inspiring viewpoints in India.

Attractions Other Than the Trek

One of the major reasons why people choose the Harishchandragad trek in Maharashtra over others is its plethora of attractions at once. Let’s list them one by one, so that you don’t miss any.

Konkan Kada

The most famous cliff of Maharashtra. It is known for

●      cloud inversions

●      sunset views

●      reverse waterfall effect

●      landscape photography

Kedareshwar Cave

This cave is the residence of a huge Shiva Lingam immersed in water throughout most of the year. It involves wading through icy water to visit the cave, thus making the experience unique.

Harishchandreshwar Temple

A great example of an ancient stone temple architecture located in the Sahyadris range. The carved stones astonish most of the visitors since the place is popularly known for its trekking site.

Taramati Peak

The highest point on the Harishchandragad hill. For trekkers interested in exploring more, it promises breathtaking views of the valley surrounding it.

TrekPanda’s Camping Experience on Harishchandragad Hill

Harishchandragad happens to be one of the places worth camping for. I believe that visiting the hill without staying one night in the camp means losing half of the experience.

So, if you pick TrekPanda’s camping trips, you can get the following experiences:

●      Sunset at Konkan Kada

●      Starry night sky with little distant lights

●      Sunrise from the plateau

●      Exploration early in the morning, before it gets crowded

Who Will Love Visiting Harishchandragad?

Harishchandragad Trek is recommended for:

●      Experienced Trekkers

●      Camping Lovers

●      History lovers

●      Landscape Photographers

●      Adventure Travelers

For those who love to explore more than reaching a summit, Harishchandragad will become one of their favourite Sahyadri destinations.

The Duration of the Treks and How You Should Plan Your Trip

The duration of the trek often stands as a deciding factor for many travellers. Therefore, here are some important details regarding how long these treks are and what to consider when planning your trip.

Kalsubai Trek

·       Trek Time Duration: 7 to 8 hours in total for the trekking process, both climbing and descending.

·       Total Distance Travelled during Trekking: Around 6.6 km from Bari Village to the Summit of the Mountain.

·       Time Duration of Trekking while Ascending: Around 3.5-4 hours

·       Time Duration of Trekking while Descending: Around 2.5-3 hours

·       The Best Time to Begin the Trekking: At midnight, about 2:30-3:00 AM if one wants to watch the sunrise; otherwise at 5:30 AM – 6:00 AM.

·       Trip Format: It would help if you planned your trek as an overnight excursion from Mumbai/Pune to do Kalsubai, trek in the morning, and come back the same day.

In my opinion, the Kalsubai trek is ideal for trekkers who seek a challenging summit but can be achieved within a day. With the overnight excursions that TrekPanda offers, it makes the whole planning easier. All you need to do is leave in the evening from Mumbai or Pune and arrive at Bari Village by night before embarking on the Kalsubai summit. Then just climb the mountain from the mid night to watch the sunrise from the peak.

Harishchandragad Trek

●  Overall Trek Duration: Depending upon the route taken, it will take around 6-10 hours to reach and trek up to Harishchandragad Fort.

●  Popular Villages for Camping: Pachnai, Khireshwar, Belpada, and Nalichi Vaat.

●      Simple Path: Path through Pachnai Village takes 2-3 hours.

●      Moderate Trekking Path: Khireshwar Village Trek Path Time 3-4 hours.

●  Complicated Trekking Path: Nalichi Vaat Route Path 6-8 hours approx. Only for experienced Trekkers.

●  Optimum Time for Trek: 1 Day / 2 Nights for enjoying the fort, caves, temples, and Konkan Kada entirely.

While the focus in Kalsubai was on conquering the peak, it is not the case with Harishchandragad trek. The place demands more time to explore it. During my trip to Harishchandragad, I camped for one night in the fort. Thus, I enjoyed the sunset and sunrise on Konkan Kada, and it was the best part of the trek. Therefore, choosing TrekPanda’s camping-based itinerary is best for Harishchandragad fort.

These treks are among the most famous Maharashtra trekking destinations. They are easily accessible from both Mumbai and Pune.

Key Differences

The basic difference between the two is obvious. Kalsubai provides a summiteering experience, while Harishchandragad provides an adventurous experience. While one is all about reaching the summit, the other is about exploring.

Trail Difficulty & Terrain: Steep Ladders vs. Endurance Routes

The challenge level is often the deciding factor between these two Sahyadri treks in Maharashtra. Understand the difficulty factors and challenges of each trail to pick the suitable one for you.

Kalsubai Trek Challenge

The challenge level of the Kalsubai trek lies in its steep nature. The entire trek consists of climbing, and there is no reprieve once you start climbing up.

The ladder part may be scary for first-time trekkers, but they are relatively safe. The challenge here is that of intensity, as you will have to keep on climbing till you reach the summit.

I observed that most of the trekkers tend to get tired during the last phase near the summit temple. But with proper rest breaks and pace control by TrekPanda, it becomes easy for us.

Challenges in Harishchandragad Trek

The difficulty level of the Harishchandragad trek is completely different. In fact, it requires endurance rather than climbing prowess.

The terrain consists of:

●      Rocky terrains

●      Forest trails

●      Plateau treks

●      Uphill treks

Unlike the former, the latter needs consistent use of energy over time.

Monsoon Challenges on Both Treks

Kalsubai Monsoon Trek Challenges

●      Slippery ladders

●      High-altitude summit winds

●      Poor visibility

Harishchandragad Monsoon Trek Challenges

●      Water crossings

●      Muddy trails

●      Foggy conditions

●      Visibility issues around Konkan Kada

Which Trek is Safer for Beginners?

As far as first-time trekkers are concerned, Kalsubai is relatively easy to complete since:

●      It features an easy and straight trail

●      Its goal is quite apparent

●      The trek duration is relatively short

Nevertheless, guided treks make both trails safer. TrekPanda’s experienced guides always keep track of the group’s speed and the prevailing weather conditions.

Tips for Fitness Before Trekking

Before getting into any of the above treks, you will have to measure your fitness levels. It is better to prepare your body for at least 1 to 2 months with these minimum trainings;

●      Climb stairs frequently.

●      Do some cardio exercises.

●      Properly hydrate the body.

●      Buy proper trekking shoes.

●      Don’t bring extra baggage.

Even basic fitness training helps greatly when doing either trek.

Final Verdict: Which Sahyadri Trail is Right for You?

As far as the comparison of these two popular weekend trips from Mumbai or Pune goes, it should be noted that both of them have advantages and disadvantages. The answer completely depends on your preferences.

Choose Kalsubai Trek if…

The Kalsubai trek is a great choice for those seeking mountaineering experience. Being the highest point in Maharashtra State, Kalsubai guarantees you an unforgettable experience that you will remember for a lifetime.

This is a good trek option for beginner trekkers since the way up is quite simple and obvious, and your goal is quite clear, too. Another advantage of the Kalsubai trek is the time – you will spend only one day going up there.

Of course, the best moment on top of the mountain is watching a sunrise from its summit, when all the Sahyadri ranges come alive in front of you.

Harishchandragad Trek is Ideal For…

The Harishchandragad trek is recommended to those seeking a full experience on their trips. It provides a variety of attractions such as historical sites, natural beauty, adventures, and much more.

Ancient temples, caves, beautiful plateaus, and forest paths make the path of the trek rich for content creators as well. Moreover, it can be considered among the best choices for those who are fond of camping overnight in the mountains.

Finally, the highest point of the trip is the amazing cliff of Konkan Kada. Those who enjoy beautiful landscapes should not worry because Harishchandragad always has something nice to show.

What I Learned After Trekking Kalsubai and Harishchandragad

Upon completing both hikes, I was convinced that they fulfilled very different travel needs. While Kalsubai provided me with a sense of accomplishment, Harishchandragad gave me a feeling of exploration.

I vividly recall the celebratory mood at the top of Kalsubai, being at the highest point of Maharashtra. Whereas the memory of the quiet moment spent by Konkan Kada, being speechless at the views, often puts a smile on my face.

Such a difference sums up my experience perfectly.
