About this tour

Shimla, the summer capital of Himachal Pradesh, has a rich history and natural beauty. Perched on several hills like Jakhu, Prospect, and Summer Hill, each offering unique perspectives of the region’s rugged terrain. Shimla’s name is believed to have originated from ‘Shyamalaya’ or ‘Shamla,’ which is associated with the Goddess Kali, and it gained prominence after the British established their summer capital there in 1864. The district, officially formed on September 1, 1972, after the reorganisation of Himachal’s districts, includes historic hill states like Bushahr, Jubbal, and others, each with its distinct legacies, such as Bushahr’s link to the legendary Pradhuman, son of Lord Krishna, and Jubbal’s past as a tributary of Sirmaur. The district’s topography varies dramatically, ranging from 300 to 6,000 meters, creating a landscape of panoramic views, lush pastures, and snow-capped peaks. Shimla’s colonial charm is evident in landmarks like the Viceregal Lodge and the narrow-gauge railway to Kalka, which began operating in 1903. This region’s significance extends to its role in India’s independence movement, hosting critical conferences in the run-up to 1947.

Manali, another jewel in Himachal’s crown, is internationally renowned for its breathtaking scenery, dense forests, and snow-clad mountains. Situated 45 kilometres from Kullu, Manali has ancient roots linked to the sage Manu, who is believed to have set foot here after the great deluge, with the town’s name derived from ‘Manu-Alaya,’ meaning the abode of Manu. This area is the gateway to adventurous routes across Rohtang and Baralacha passes, connecting to Leh, Ladakh, and Spiti. Together, Shimla and Manali represent the rich historical and natural heritage of Himachal Pradesh, making them prime destinations for tourists seeking both the serenity of nature and the echoes of a storied past.
