On the second day of your Gangtok excursion, you'll explore several captivating sights. Start with Bakthang Waterfall, a serene spot just 3 km from Gangtok. Next, visit Tashi Viewpoint and Ganesh Tok for stunning Himalayan views. Explore the 200-year-old Enchey Monastery, then admire local crafts at the Directorate of Handicraft and Handloom. Visit Do Drul Chorten Stupa, the largest in Sikkim, and the Institute of Tibetology for cultural insights. Enjoy the vibrant Flower Show, and end your day with a scenic Ropeway ride to Banjhakri Falls. Return to your hotel for a relaxing time.

Meaning “hilltop,” Gangtok is undeniably one of India’s most picturesque hill stations. It harmoniously blends cultural diversity with modern urbanisation, making it a lively and dynamic part of Northeast India. It is a popular destination with breathtaking views of Mount Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak. Popular attractions include Tsomgo Lake, Ban Jhakri Falls, Tashi Viewpoint, Enchey Monastery, Ganesh Tok, and Rumtek Monastery, further enhancing its charm. The Teesta River offers an exciting white-water rafting experience.
Places To Visit
Tsomgo Lake
Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake, is 12,310 feet above sea level and 40 kilometres from Gangtok. Its icy blue waters mirror the majestic Himalayan peaks. Prayer wheels and small Shiva shores complement the lake’s serene beauty, highlighting its sacred significance to the locals.
Kanchenjunga Mountain
The third-highest peak in the world offers a breathtaking spectacle from Gangtok. This majestic, snow-covered mountain dominates the skyline of Sikkim and is visible from many spots around the city. Trekking to the base camp or exploring Kanchenjunga National Park provides an unforgettable experience for those seeking a closer encounter with this towering giant.
Phodong Monastery
Phodong Monastery attracts hundreds of pilgrims all around the year. The golden statue, installed on a raised platform, is overwhelming, grand, and auspicious. Because of its excellent iron starter fire, those families from the North could get married to Hindu and Buddhist [sic] cultures. Further, the Chief’s palace today is memorably filled with thrill and tradition. There’s rich gold plating on the ceilings. Digital music sources do not work in some villages because they have good, deep songs and hymns to serenade each other. Parents are expected to raise their children independently in the town, and the unmarried adults build more developed villages in the mountains.
Magnan
Magnan is a peaceful yet exciting town just 65 km from Gangtok. It offers breathtaking mountain views, thrilling activities like paragliding and mountain biking, and a few serene monasteries for a spiritual touch. Magnan has something for everyone, whether looking for adventure or relaxation.
Nathu La Pass
China’s Tibet Autonomous Region has historically been linked to the ancient Silk Route, one of the world’s most crucial trade paths. When in Gangtok, a visit to Nathu La Pass is a must. You can either drive or trek to enjoy its beauty. The breathtaking mountain views from the past make for a truly memorable experience.
Ganesh Tok
Located near Tashi View Point and Bakthang Falls. The temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesh. Be sure to spend time at the nearby gallery to take in the beautiful surroundings and enjoy the scenic landscape.
Ban Jhakri Falls
Locals believe this stunning 100-foot waterfall has the spiritual power to ward off evil spirits. While there, don’t miss the popular artificial lake, a favourite spot for visitors year-round.
Do Drul Chorten Stupa
The Do Drul Chorten Stupa in Gangtok, built by Trulshik Rinpoche in 1945-46, is a historic and spiritual landmark. It’s believed to protect the city from evil spirits and features 108 prayer wheels with wish-granting powers. The stupa’s golden tophonotop, which honours the figure of Dorjee Phurpa, symbolises protection.
Rumtek Monastery
The Rumtek Monastery is a significant Tibetan Buddhist site. Its beautiful architecture includes three floors with detailed art and statues, including a stupa on the top floor. The monastery offers spiritual depth and a rich history.
Visit Gangtok from mid-September to November, when the weather is pleasant for sightseeing. You can also explore the city during the mild summer months from March to June.
Due to heavy snowfall and harsh weather, Nathula Pass is closed from December to March. However, it is usually open to tourists from April to November, depending on the weather.
Gangtok offers views of Mount Kanchenjunga, the third-highest peak in the world, and is surrounded by natural beauty. Places of attraction include Tsomgo Lake, Ban Jhakri Falls, and Tashi Viewpoint.
Zero Point, or Yume Samdong, is l5,300 feet above sea level. It’s the last point of civilisation, where three rivers converge, offering breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains and stunning scenery.
Darjeeling offers serene landscapes and pleasant weather with high humidity, while Gangtok has a similarly cool climate. Both destinations are ideal for vacations.
Due to its proximity to the Indo-China border, visiting Zero Point Sikkim requires permits. Indian citizens need a Protected Area Permit (PAP), while foreigners require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) or Restricted Area Permit (RAP).
You can book tours through the Government of Sikkim. The permit costs ₹250 per person. Taxi fares range from ₹3,000 to ₹4,000 for up to six adults, and the taxi service handles the permit arrangements.
Jio network works well only in the capital, but Airtel and Vodafone connections should be reliable throughout Sikkim.
The Changu Lake Ropeway, one of the highest in Asia, offers stunning views of the lake and snow-capped mountains. Adventure seekers in Sikkim must try it. The cost is approximately INR 300-400 per person.
