Best Time to Visit

The ideal time for the Bun Buni Pass trek is during the pre-monsoon (April to June) and post-monsoon (September to November) seasons.

  • Spring (Apr to Jun): The weather is pleasant, and you might find lush greenery and late-season rhododendron blooms.
  • Autumn (Sep to Nov): The skies are clear after the monsoon, offering the best long-distance views of the Himalayas.
  • Monsoon (Jul-Aug): Best avoided, as the trails can become extremely slippery and hazardous.
  • Winter (Dec-Mar): The pass is typically inaccessible due to heavy snowfall.

This trek is considered moderate. While the trail from Kalga to Bun Buni Top is mostly gentle, it involves a significant altitude gain of over 1,100 meters, which requires good cardiovascular fitness. The descent from Bun Buni on the second day is steep and can be demanding on the knees. No technical climbing is required, but stamina is essential.

Essential Things to Carry

  • Apparel: Good waterproof trekking shoes are a must. Carry T-shirts, comfortable trek pants, and thermals for the cold nights.
  • Warmth: A warm cap, gloves, and ear muffs are crucial for the cold evenings at Bun Buni. Pack at least two warm jackets (one fleece, one down or padded).
  • Protection: A raincoat or poncho is vital, even outside the monsoon. Also carry sunscreen, lip balm, and sunglasses.
  • Gear: A lightweight 40-50L backpack, a power bank (no electricity), and a water bottle (1-2 litres).
  • Personal: A basic toilet kit (toothbrush, toothpaste, biodegradable soap, moisturiser) and toilet paper. Hand sanitiser is also recommended.
