In Leh, travellers can explore attractions showcasing the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Leh Palace
Upon arriving in Leh, the imposing Leh Palace is one of the first striking sights. This historic structure, reminiscent of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, offers a glimpse into medieval Tibetan architecture. Built using wood, stone, mud, and sand, the Leh Palace is a prominent example of this style and provides panoramic views of the city and the surrounding snow-capped mountains. The entry fee to the palace is ₹300 (USD 4.30). Visitors can easily reach the Leh Palace on foot from the central area of Leh.
Tsemo Castle, also known as Tsemo Fort, is situated on a hilltop about a 15-minute walk from Leh Palace. Visitors can reach it by walking uphill or taking a taxi for a more convenient approach. The castle offers views of the surrounding area, although the interior primarily features a small Buddhist temple. Entrance to Tsemo Castle is free, and walking up the hill provides a rewarding experience with its picturesque vistas.
Thiksey Monastery, located close to Leh, is a significant site known for its historical and spiritual importance. According to legend, Buddhist monks found an offering cake placed on a hill by a crow, which was seen as an encouraging sign, leading to the monastery’s establishment in that location. The monastery features several temples, the most notable being the Maitreya Temple, which houses a 12-meter-high statue of Maitreya Buddha. Additional smaller temples include the Tara Temple and the Golden & Silver Temples. The entry fee is ₹30 (approximately USD 0.40). To reach Thiksey Monastery, visitors can take a minibus from Leh to Choglamsar and then transfer to another minibus, with a total journey time of around 40 minutes.
Shanti Stupa, situated atop a hill in Leh, offers stunning panoramic views, even on cloudy days. The stupa is known for its serene and picturesque setting. Admission is free, making it an accessible and worthwhile visit for travellers. To reach Shanti Stupa, visitors can follow the route marked on maps, and many choose to walk the path, enjoying the scenic ascent. The location provides a tranquil environment for reflecting and appreciating the surrounding landscapes.
Main Bazaar Road in Leh is a vibrant and charming street with various small shops offering multiple products. It’s a great place for browsing trinkets or exploring the local atmosphere. Beyond shopping, the street features numerous food options, with a notable selection of dried fruits at affordable prices. Despite this, the mosque remains a significant landmark in Leh, reflecting the cultural and religious diversity of the area. Its presence on Main Bazaar Road adds to its rich tapestry of local landmarks and attractions.
Thisuru Stupa, or Tsuru or Tisuru Stupa, is a unique and notable structure within walking distance from central Leh. Its distinctive design, resembling the Pyramid of Djoser in Cairo with its half-square shape, sets it apart from the more common stupa styles in the region. The stupa’s unusual architecture makes it a fascinating visit for those interested in different Buddhist structures. Admission to Thisuru Stupa is free, and it can be easily reached by walking from the centre of Leh and following the route on maps.
Donkey Sanctuary in Leh is a compassionate organisation dedicated to caring for abandoned donkeys in the region. In Ladakh’s remote and rugged areas, donkeys are often used for transportation but are left behind when they become old or unfit for work. This sanctuary provides a refuge for these animals, offering them care and shelter in their later years. It plays a crucial role in rescuing and rehabilitating donkeys, ensuring they receive the attention and support they need, and reflecting the sanctuary’s commitment to animal welfare.
